Sincerity (Ikhlāṣ) is one of the greatest qualities a Muslim can possess. It means performing every act of worship solely for the pleasure of Allah without seeking praise, recognition, fame, wealth, or status from people. Every prayer, fast, charity, recitation of the Quran, act of kindness, and every good deed should be done only to earn the pleasure of Allah.

Allah repeatedly commands believers to worship Him with pure sincerity. A deed may appear great in the eyes of people, but if it is performed for showing off (Riyā’), it loses its reward before Allah. Likewise, a small deed performed with complete sincerity may become one of the greatest deeds on the Day of Judgment.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that the value of every action depends upon the intention behind it. This famous principle forms the foundation of Islamic worship and ethics. Before beginning any good deed, a Muslim should ask himself whether he is doing it for Allah alone.

Sincerity also protects the believer from hypocrisy, arrogance, and pride. A sincere servant remains humble because he knows that only Allah knows the true intention hidden within the heart. Such a person continues doing good whether people appreciate him or not.

Scholars explain that sincerity has three stages. The first is to intend only Allah before beginning a deed. The second is to maintain sincerity throughout the action without seeking people's admiration. The third is to avoid pride after completing the deed and instead thank Allah for giving the ability to perform it.

Every believer should regularly renew his intention, ask Allah for sincerity, and remember that acceptance of deeds depends more upon sincerity than their quantity.

Quran Allah says: "And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, being sincere to Him in religion." Surah Al-Bayyinah (98:5) Allah also says: "Indeed, We have sent down to you the Book in truth, so worship Allah, being sincere to Him in religion." Surah Az-Zumar (39:2) Allah says: "He created death and life to test you as to which of you is best in deed." Scholars explain that "best in deed" means the deed that is both sincere and correct according to the Sunnah. Surah Al-Mulk (67:2) Authentic Hadith The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Actions are judged by intentions, and every person will have only what they intended." Sahih al-Bukhari (1) Sahih Muslim (1907) Imam An-Nawawi رحمه الله stated that this hadith is one of the greatest principles of Islam and that nearly every act of worship returns to this hadith. Ibn Rajab رحمه الله explained that sincere intention distinguishes acts of worship from ordinary actions and determines whether a deed is accepted by Allah.
